YONKERS, N.Y., May 10, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The redesigned Kia Optima outpointed the high-selling Honda Accord in a face-off between the two family sedans conducted by Consumer Reports. The Optima now ranks among the top 10 of all four-cylinder family sedans tested by the organization.

The Optima now ranks sixth among the four-cylinder family sedans tested by Consumer Reports, ahead of the Honda Accord and behind the Suzuki Kizashi. The Optima edged out the Accord by just one point in CR’s testing. Both vehicles achieved “Very Good” overall scores.

Top-scoring four-cylinder family sedans include the Nissan Altima, Hyundai Sonata and Toyota Camry, in that order.

Kia’s Optima drew praise from Consumer Reports’ engineers for its handling, transmission, controls, fuel economy (25 mpg overall in CR’s own tests) and its crash-test results. Its lows included road noise, low rear-seat height, and limited rear visibility.

Consumer Reports also released its evaluations of three midsized SUVs, the redesigned Ford Explorer, the gas/electric Toyota Highlander Hybrid and the diesel-powered Volkswagen Touareg TDI. The Highlander Hybrid outpointed the others and posted an “Excellent” overall road test score. The Touareg came in close behind the Highlander and now ranks fourth overall in CR’s ratings of midsized SUVs. The Explorer fell short in this competitive market segment and now ranks 17th out of 19 vehicles in the category.

The June issue, which goes on sale May 10, also features results of a survey of subscribers on independent repair shops vs. car dealers, with independents getting higher marks in satisfaction and a special look at a reader’s 2004 Toyota Prius, which traveled some 214,000 miles—yet still delivers similar fuel economy and performance to when it was brand new.

All the reports are also available to subscribers of www.ConsumerReports.org. Updated daily, ConsumerReports is the go-to Website for the latest auto reviews, product news, blogs on breaking news and car buying information.

Consumer Reports has current ratings on dozens of makes and models of both sedans and SUVs. All five newly-rated vehicles were either redesigned or freshened for 2011.

The Highlander Hybrid gets a newer V6 engine that helps boost its gas mileage to 27 mpg overall, up from its previous 24. That makes it the most fuel-efficient SUV in CR’s ratings with gas mileage far better than any conventional SUV and comparable to a small sedan’s. The Highlander Hybrid is also a quiet and comfortable vehicle, with a roomy second-row seat and a handy third row.

The Highlander Hybrid and the Accord are the only vehicles tested this month that are Recommended. The Touareg, Explorer, and Optima are too new for Consumer  Reports  to have adequate reliability data to Recommend. Consumer Reports only Recommends vehicles that have performed well in its tests, have at least average predicted reliability based on CR’s Annual Auto Survey of its more than seven million print and Web subscribers, and performed at least adequately if crash-tested or included in a government rollover test.

The Optima has benefitted from a major redesign. Handling is more nimble than the Accord with quick steering. The Kia Optima LX ($21,885 Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price as tested,) is powered by a 200-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers strong performance and 25 mpg overall. The six-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly. Braking is very good. The interior is well-finished. There is plenty of trunk space.

The Accord has improved fuel economy since the last time it was tested. It has a compliant ride, excellent visibility and a roomy cabin. The Accord handles responsively, with good steering, but when it was pushed at CR’s test track, it was sloppy with notable body lean. The Honda Accord LX-P ($23,730 MSRP as tested), is powered by a 177-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that provides strong performance and gets 25 mpg overall. The five-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly. Braking is very good. The interior is well-finished. Trunk space is generous.

The Highlander Hybrid is quicker than the conventional V6 model and offers a compliant and smooth ride. The Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited ($47,255 MSRP as tested,) is powered by a 280-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine combined with three electric motors that is responsive and gets 27 mpg overall in CR’s own fuel economy tests. The continuously variable transmission operates smoothly. Braking is very good. While the interior is well-finished, it falls short of luxurious. The 50/50-split third row folds flat and the cargo room is large when the rear seats are folded.

The Touareg is an agile, solid, luxurious SUV with comfortable seats and a plush interior. The highway ride is steady and well-controlled. The Volkswagen Touareg TDI Sport ($49,505 MSRP as tested,) is powered by a 225-hp 3.0-liter, turbodiesel V6 engine that is responsive and gets 24 mpg overall. The eight-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly. Braking is very good. Interior quality is first-rate. A third row is not available, unlike the Highlander Hybrid and the Explorer. Cargo room is just modest for a midsized SUV, but towing capacity is impressive.

The redesigned Explorer is much improved over the previous model, but it still doesn’t compete with the best in this class. The Explorer has a steady and compliant ride and decent fuel economy, but the engine is noisy and handling is not agile, even for this class. The Ford Explorer XLT ($39,275 MSRP as tested,) is powered by a 290-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine that provides lively performance and 18 mpg overall. The six-speed automatic transmission is sometimes slow to downshift. Braking is very good. The optional MyFord Touch dashboard design is overcomplicated and distracting to use. The interior is mostly well-finished. The cargo area is generous.

Like the Explorer, the redesigned-for-2011 Dodge Durango three-row SUV moved off of a truck-based platform to a unibody design. CR is testing the Durango for a later issue.

  • Impaired driver crashes into Honda

Posted 25 days ago

Police are urging the public to avoid drinking and driving after a 28-year-old crashed into a parked Honda Civic early Sunday morning. The man, who was twice over the legal limit, was driving a pick up truck down Larch Street around 2:30 a.m. when he hit the unoccupied vehicle, which resulted in more than $10,000 worth of damage to the Honda and more than $4,000 worth of damage to the truck. While no one was hurt, the situation could have ended in death, police said, adding that the man was charged with impaired driving and blowing over the legal limit.

“Had the Honda Civic been occupied by a person or had pedestrians walking along the roadway been in the way of this impaired driver there is a strong possibility that human lives would have been lost,” said police.

“This community has suffered enough tragedies related to impaired driving over the last years and we are once again encouraging the public to find alternate means of transportation when they are drinking.”

the 2011 Honda CR-V.

Honda will extend production of the 2011 CR-V by one month to cover the delayed launch of the redesigned 2012 model.

Honda Motor Co. on Monday warned dealers of more vehicle shortages and said it would delay the fall launch of its redesigned CR-V crossover.

American Honda Motor Co. Executive Vice President John Mendel told dealers in a memo that the automaker would fill March and April orders for Japan-built vehicles with May and June production. After that, the supply of vehicles from Japan will be restricted.

“Due to the limited parts supply we will bring in only a very limited number of Japan-built vehicles for the remainder of the year,” Mendel said in the memo.

Affected vehicles include the Fit, CR-Z, Insight and Civic Hybrid, which will be unavailable for order until later in the year.

Dealers were told to prepare for “severely limited” inventories during summer, with colors and trim levels preselected by the automaker.

Honda also said it would reduce output of the redesigned 2012 Civic through the summer. Mendel told dealers that they would continue to receive product but it would be restricted to certain models.

In addition, Honda will delay the fall launch of the 2012 CR-V by at least one month, according to the memo. To prevent a production gap, the automaker will extend output of the 2011 CR-V.

Last month, Honda warned that production would not return to normal until year end.

In Japan, Honda’s output will continue at 50 percent of capacity through June, the automaker said. Outside Japan, production plans will be made case-by-case based on parts availability. The automaker also has restricted dealer allocations for certain vehicle colors due to paint pigment shortages.

“Future orders will need to be adjusted to reflect the availability of suitable replacement paints,” Mendel’s memo said.

Honda, like Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group LLC, uses paint with pigments made by German supplier Merck KGaA. A key Merck factory in Japan that produces the material has been offline since the March 11 earthquake because it is too close to a nuclear reactor crippled by the quake. It is the sole producer of a pigment called Xirallic, which is used to give metallic paints a glistening look.

In a move Honda says is “independent from the current parts supply situation,” the automaker will shuffle its production lineup at U.S. assembly plants starting next year.

In 2012, Honda will shift output of the Acura RDX from Marysville, Ohio, to East Liberty, Ohio. The Honda CR-V will be added to the lineup at Alliston, Ontario, next year. In 2013, the Acura MDX will move from Alliston to Lincoln, Ala.

After the earthquake, Honda resumed limited vehicle output on April 11 at its Sayama and Suzuka plants. The Sayama site builds the Honda CR-V, Accord and Fit, as well as the Acura RL and TSX. The Suzuka plant assembles the Honda Fit, Civic, Civic Hybrid, Insight and CR-Z.

In North America, Honda has extended production cuts at eight U.S. and Canadian factories through Friday, May 6, with output varying at each plant. Honda originally planned for the production cuts to run through April 22.

More production cuts have been made in the United Kingdom and India.

Hyundai already has; Hyundai sales are up 40% in April, Ford sales are up 15%.

There are things to consider when buying a new car like the deciding on how much money we are going to spend and of course the kind of car we want. We can always have the choice of buying a new one or used car but remember it’s advantage and disadvantages.

If you are on a tight budget, then probably a used car will fit your needs. You can save a lot of money when buying a used car since a new car depreciates quickly. Usually, we buy a car for family use. A good type is the Honda Accord. Buy a used type of this car only in trusted sellers. Buying cars online can be cheaper but costs too much shipping fee.

Or if you have a car already and wants to trade it, check out the website http://www.ednapletonhonda.com, they have new and used car inventories. Internet comes in handy for the seller and buyer. They can browse the car they want even if they are busy with their work. No need to visit the car store to check the car’s prices. Honda Dealer Blog Chicago offers short overview about the cars they are selling.

CAMBRIDGE, MA–(Marketwire – 05/06/11) – For new graduates hoping to drive away from commencement in a car of their own, finding dream wheels on a starter-salary budget can be a challenge. To help them, auto research and shopping site CarGurus.com (www.cargurus.com) today released its picks for the best used car deals for grads, offering young buyers (and their parents) suggestions and price guidance on safe, fuel-efficient used cars that are available in this spring’s marketplace for less than $20K. On the list: the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta, the 2006 Volkswagen Passat, the 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer, the 2009 Ford Fusion, the 2008 Scion xB, the 2009 Honda Accord and the 2007 Ford Edge.

To arrive at its list, CarGurus reviewed millions of used vehicle listings for sale at dealers around the U.S. as of May 1, 2011, targeting cars less than six years old and typically available for less than $20K. The list was further limited to cars that received the highest safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (www.iihs.org) for that model year. Pickup trucks, SUVs and convertibles were excluded. In addition, CarGurus considered fuel economy, limiting picks to cars that would allow grads to cap their weekly gas expenses at $40, assuming $4/gallon and 200 combined miles driven per week. Finally, CarGurus assessed its listings database of 2+ million cars, including only cars showing ample inventory.

The following chart highlights CarGurus’ picks for the best used car deals for grads this Spring. The CarGurus’ Instant Market Value (IMV) price below is based on a mathematical analysis of current and historic listings for comparable cars with mileage that is typical (about average) for the listings studied. While this IMV provides guidance as to each car’s value, grads shopping for a car should use CarGurus’ free DealFinder shopping tool to search for the best deals from dealers in their local areas. For any car searched, DealFinder provides a ranked view on “great deals” that offer savings off the Instant Market Value.

“In this tight spring car market, finding a great deal in the lower price ranges might seem like a tall order, but our research points to several well-priced cars that deliver on important criteria like safety and fuel efficiency,” said Langley Steinert, founder and CEO of CarGurus. “The key is search, don’t settle. Young buyers that put their web savvy to work for them when shopping for a car will be at an advantage. Free online tools like our DealFinder can help shoppers get informed about prices and narrow their search to find the best deals in a local area.”

CarGurus’ Tips for Shopping for a Used Car Online:

  • Price Shop. The Web brings transparency to used car pricing; use it to your advantage so you do not overpay for a vehicle. Find comparable local car listings from multiple dealers, and bring those listings to the dealers with whom you are negotiating. Having more information will give you more leverage.
  • Know Your Options. Many online pricing tools for used cars do not account for options, which can significantly impact the price of a car. A car that looks like a great deal on your screen might in fact lack some of the features you care about most. Likewise, some options can drive the price up and out of your budget. Get familiar with the options that were available for the car year you’re considering, and decide which if any you absolutely have to have.
  • Wait for the Price to Drop. Most used cars that have been on the market for more than 30 days have at least one price drop. The market is tightening this Spring, but there’s still a good chance you can wait out a better deal. CarGurus’ DealFinder allows you to track a car’s price history and time on market, and you can sign up for email alerts that will let you know when prices drop.

About CarGurus’ DealFinder
CarGurus’ free DealFinder (http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/forsale) shopping tool offers consumers a transparent online car shopping experience, giving them instant guidance on the best deals in their local area. Shoppers plug in their zip code and desired car and get an instant view of available vehicles, ranked from great deals to listings that are overpriced. For each listing, DealFinder also provides a detailed price history, so consumers can see how long a car has been on the market as well as any price drops it has had — information that can be used during a negotiation.

DealFinder rankings are based on a mathematical analysis that factors in the prices of millions of current and recently sold comparable listings to determine a car’s Instant Market Value and how each listing compares to the current market. Unlike many other listings sites, the search results are unbiased by listings providers.

About CarGurus
CarGurus (http://www.cargurus.com/) is a leading online automotive destination that is focused on making the online car shopping and research experience more transparent for consumers. Located in Cambridge, MA, the company was founded by Langley Steinert, co-founder and former Chairman of TripAdvisor, the largest travel site in the world.

Sakia Sanders could have waited to buy a 2011 Honda Accord from Apple Honda in York.

Her Toyota runs well.

Aside from wanting a smaller vehicle, Sanders decided to buy a new car now rather than risk waiting a few months and her new Honda not be available.

“I was concerned that if I waited until the summer, I might not get an Accord,” she said.

And Sanders’ concerns are not unfounded.

Japanese-based companies damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, such as those that supply parts and equipment to global automobile manufacturers, continue to struggle to get back on track.

Within the next few months, car manufacturers, such as Honda, are expected to run short of Japanese-made

parts and equipment needed for new models.

“Virtually every Honda model will be in short supply,” said Tim Kelly, general manager of Apple Honda in York. “Honda’s April production of cars was cut in half. Half of the cars were made in April and the other half is being made this month. New car inventories are going to be tight.”

Honda does expect to return to normal production until the end of the year, he said.

Roughly 80 percent of all Honda models sold in the United States are manufactured in North America, Kelly said.

But, one problem that threatens to keep new Hondas from local dealerships are potential shortages in automotive products such as computer chips.

About 41 percent of computer chips used in all new cars, not just Hondas, are manufactured at a Japanese plant that was heavily damaged during the earthquake, said Ernie Marcum, general manager of the Hanover Automotive.

Hanover Automotive sells both Honda and Hyundai vehicles.

The dealership’s best-selling Honda models include the Honda Civic, Honda Accord and Honda CR-V., Marcum said.

“So far there has been no effect,” he said. “I expect that in the next 60 to 70 days there will shorter supply of new cars.”

Even with the new car shortages, window sticker prices will not climb, Marcum said.

“We are not charging more for new cars,” he said.

And it’s not just foreign vehicles that have been affected.

Certain red and black paints, those types whose pigments are manufactured in Japan, will not be available for Ford models for a while, said Ed Baker, general manager of Beasley Ford Lincoln Mercury in Springettsbury Township.

The good news for consumers is the expected shortage of new cars has increased the value of used vehicles.

This month, Apple Honda is running a marketing campaign in which it will buy a used car whether a person agrees to purchase a new vehicle, Kelly said.

“We have about double the normal used car inventory right now,” Marcum said.

As of Thursday, Apple Honda has 89 new cars and roughly 70 used cars, Kelly said.

“But, I’m sure that will change and time goes on,” he said.

However, the stocking up of used cars by dealerships to fill the probable void left by a shortage of new vehicles is not the only reason behind the brisk sales of used cars.

The higher cost of gasoline has prompted more people to seek out smaller, more fuel efficient and less expensive cars, Marcum said.

On Wednesday, the price for regular gas in York County was 3.889 per gallon — more than $1 compared to this time last year, according to the AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

“We are taking in some many more used cars because of the economic times,” Marcum said.

Despite the expected shortages, both Honda dealerships expect to weather the next seven months with few problems.

“We have about a 35-day supply of new cars on the lot,” Kelly said. “We’re OK for now.”

Marcum agreed.

“There’s going to be a blip mid-summer,” he said. “I think we will have ample product.”
